Bad Blogger Time!!

I’ve continued to stay strong on my book buying ban. The only one of these that was purchased was a pre-order and that’s the last of the pre-ban pre-orders….so that should be it on the purchases until I meet the criteria to actually buy a book! Let me tell you…I went to Barnes and Noble last night and I browsed…and it was horrible!!! So hard! The first thing I saw was David Egger’s The Wild Things in all of it’s glorious beauty…but I put it back 😦 And then I found a new John Connolly book called The Gates!! But I put it back 😦 And then I found Nick Hornby’s Juliet Naked! But I put it back 😦 So HARD!!! I added the Connolly book and the Hornby book to my library list, but I’m going to have to buy The Wild Things, so I think that will be my reward once I read 15 of my own books! So these are all of the books that actually did come home with me this week and the blame behind them:

1. Panic in Level Four by Richard Preston – Oh this one just sounds so good! Debi mentioned this one on her blog a while back and I just knew that it was something that I’d enjoy! And it’s nice and short too. I love interesting, short, non-fic reads. Point to Debi! (Mooched)

2. Green Porno by Isabella Rossellini – I was sent this for review and I was so excited when I received it 🙂 I read the book already, but I’m saving my review for after I watch the DVD as well because it’s mostly a companion to the short films. Oh I just love Ms. Rossellini 🙂 She imagines herself as different animals (mostly sea creatures) and explains to us (and acts out) how she would mate if she were them. It’s fantastic stuff! (Review Copy)

3. What I Was by Meg Rosoff – I don’t think I can blame this one on just one person because I think everyone and there grandma has read the entire Meg Rosoff catalogue except for me. But I’m excited to at least own this one now and hopefully I can read it! One thing I can tell you that I love about her books already? The covers! If you think they’re pretty in pictures, you really need to see them in person…they’re just gorgeous! (Mooched)

4. Yotsuba! Vol. 1 by Kiyohika Azuma – I can’t tell you the shit that I’ve gone through to get this book!!! Ok…so Darla wrote this amazing review of it a long time ago and I knew I wanted to read this series. Well it sounded like as soon as I decided that, they decided to stop publishing it :/ And my library doesn’t carry it! So I ordered it on Amazon because they said they had a few copies left…they lied. Sidenote: I just got a note from Amazon a year later telling me they would not be able to fulfill my shipping request for this book. Everytime I’d go to the bookstore I would look for this book. They didn’t have it. I FINALLY just got a copy on Paperback Swap!! Yay!! So I’m very excited about this one 🙂 Point to Darla D.! (Paperback Swap)

5. A Cool Moonlight by Angela Johnson – I don’t even remember that much about this book :/ I just remember Nymeth reviewing it and me saying “oooh, I really want to read that!!” And then getting a copy on Paperback Swap. Point to Nymeth!(Paperback Swap)

6. Complications by Atul Gawande – So I had this conversation with Eva the other night on twitter telling her that the reason she probably doesn’t get many Bad Blogger points from me is because I’m scared that I’m too stupid to read the books that she loves even though she makes them sound amazing. I swear, she still intimidates me after knowing her for two years, but not really :p This one just sounded too good to pass up though!! So I PBS’d a copy 🙂 Point to Eva!! (Paperback Swap)

7. Cleopatra’s Daughter by Michelle Moran – Look at that!! This week Eva and Kelly were both saying that they don’t get many Bad Bloggers points and now they both do 😉 Kelly made me really want to read this book…and then she put up a copy on Historical Tapestry as a giveaway and I won it!!! I also won a pair of earrings, but I told her she could send those to Eva :p Point to Kelly! (Giveaway Win)

8. Her Fearful Symmetry by Audrey Niffenegger – \o/ My love for this book has no ends. I’m in the middle of it right now. It’s probably my most anticipated read of this year and for those of you that were on Twitter when it arrived, you know that I started reading it the second it walked through the door. Unfortunately, it’s been a hell of a week, so I really haven’t gotten that much of it read. But I’m totally in love with it!! (Pre-Ordered)

9. Between Mom and Jo by Julie Anne Peters – Yay! A point for Amanda 🙂 Amanda was so excited about this book (and she still is). She convinced me right away that I needed to read it and luckily, my library had it!! It’s about a boy with two mom’s and all of the life situations that arise from that along with his own struggles as an adolescent. Really looking forward to it!! Point to Amanda! (Library Book)

  1. I adore Isabella Rossellini! She’s just so, well, she’s so. so… delightfully ODD, isn’t she!?!

  2. I just read a book that I think you will *love* it’s Lips Touch Three Times by Laini Taylor. I’ll be reviewing it soon. But the moment I saw it, I thought it would be one you’d enjoy 🙂

  3. You know, there’s a chance that I’m off to a signing for that John Connelly book tomorrow!

  4. Yay! I haz a point now! 😀

Seriously, I hope you love it as much as I did. 🙂

  5. Chris, Chris, Chris…

Don’t you know you should avoid those evil places while not buying books? I drive down the main street in my town where our silly little bookstore is located and look the other way. I can’t imagine going into a store and not buying anything! You’re stronger than I am, that’s for sure.

  6. Awww, the US cover for Her Fearful Symmetry is so much prettier than our UK one! Ordered my copy today, really looking forward to it.

  7. Care, She truly is delightfully odd 🙂 That’s a perfect way of describing her!

Becky, Oh no…ok..going RIGHT onto my wishlist :p I just can’t buy for awhile! I’ll see if the library has it!

Bart, OMG that would be amazing!!! Lucky you! We’re never lucky enough to have authors like Connolly come here 😦

Amanda, You can haz a point!! And it’s a wonderful point 🙂 I’m so excited to read this one! I think it’s the first of many points to come for you!

CJ, I know CJ…I know *hangs head in shame* I know I should not torture But I was just having bookstore withdrawals yesterday!! I had to go, lol. It was rough!

Stormfilled, Really?! I like the UK cover so much better, lol. I guess we always want what we can’t have. Though I have to admit that the US edition is designed really nicely. I love the spine of the book. It’s very elegant! Hope you enjoy it!!

  8. Does it help you if I tell you that, up until this post, I had never even heard of Meg Rosoff? (Soo… If your Bad Blogger ammo of the week is giving points to people who complain, how come I don’t get a point for anything, huh? ^-~)

I hope you’ll enjoy them, though! (Alas, but that I didn’t have your fortitude in the comic book store… But I went into the regular bookstore and came away emptyhanded, if that counts!)

  9. Oh I’ve been coveting Yotsuba for a while. Didn’t know it’s so hard to get! *sad*

  10. I got Her Fearful Symmetry, this week. Wahoo! I can’t wait, although I did read that opening and the death scene was a little too romanticized for a chick who has watched someone take their dying breath. I’ll work on getting over myself.

Have you read Richard Preston, before? I loved his book on Ebola — can’t remember the title, but I love that kind of nonfiction (scary medical science written for the lay person, I guess).

No matter how hard I try, I can’t manage to win a Michelle Moran book. I declined touring Cleopatra’s Daughter and then regretted it. But, I’ll get to her, eventually.

    Happy Reading!!!

  11. Oooh, I’d forgotten all about Green Porno! Must, must, must get that for Rich! Soooo glad you mentioned it again!

I was at the bookstore Friday night…man, it sucked! It really, truly sucked! It was like honest physical pain, wasn’t it? Picking up all those lovelies, and not being about to buy them. *sigh*

  12. Shanra, I can’t really tell you “oooh you must go read her right now!” because I haven’t read her books yet :p But everyone I know who has read her books and loved them, I trust completely. And they sound fantastic! And the covers are gorgeous. I buy books for that alone :p Oh, I have a feeling that if I went into a comic book store, I’d come out with plenty of books…I’d probably just say that they weren’t actually books so that’s ok :p

Mee, 😦 Unfortunately they do seem to be really hard to get a hold of…at least in the US…maybe you’ll have better luck over there?

Bookfool, I saw that you got Her Fearful Symmetry! Very cool!!! The opening scene was very romanticized, but it was so well written…it brought tears to my eyes right away. I swear, that woman can write like nobody’s business!! I have not read any Richard Preston before! I do love scary science books though 🙂 So I’m really looking forward to it! You know what book you’d probably like? Bonk by Mary Roach…it’s about the science of sex and coupling and was recommended to me by Dewey and I really loved it! Cleopatra’s daughter sounds fantastic, doesn’t it? I’ve been wanting to read one of her books for awhile now…I don’t know what’s stopped me. Glad I have this one now!

Debi, Green Porno is fantastic!! I really need to watch the DVD 🙂 I had a smile on my face the whole time I read the book. It’s basically just pictures from the DVD with lines from the movie. I think Rich would enjoy it! It would probably actually work for homeschool with Annie too! Isn’t it hell on earth going to the bookstore on a ban?! It was so hard!! I had to at least get a couple of magazines :/ I got the Fall issue of Martha Stewart Living that Carl talked about and the latest New Yorker…I just had to buy something!

  13. Glad to see that Cleopatra’s Daughter arrived! I look forward to you reading it. Most reviews I have seen of it are by women, so it will be interesting to have a guy opinion! And, Eva is going to wear earrings!

I started Her Fearful Symmetry and then put it down because my library pile is insane. I have to get it down a bit or it will stress me out… Or something!

Between Mom and Jo was good. I read it. 🙂

  14. I have got to get my hands on Her Fearful Symmetry. I love Audrey! And, she’s a fellow Chicagoan so that practically makes us related, right? 😉

  15. OMG. I’m so jealous that you’re reading Her Fearful Symmetry! HOWEVER, I have my own personal book buying ban called “I’m broke” so I will not be purchasing it any time soon. But ANYWAY: BONE CAME IN THE MAIL AND IT IS HUGE AND EXCITING AND I CAN’T THANK YOU ENOUGH. My BF read Yotsuba and it was just in our local bookstore hanging out. Let me know if you have any more trouble finding the rest of the series.

  16. Kailana, I’m super excited about Cleopatra’s Daughter!! I think it’s going onto my November list…it just feels like a November read. I can’t wait to see the earrings on Eva 🙂 I’m in the middle of Her Fearful Symmetry..I’m having up and down moments with it. At one point I can’t put it down and at others, I’m not that impressed…we’ll see how it turns out. Can’t wait to read Between Mom and Jo!

Bellezza, It’s really good so far! As I was telling Kailana just now, there have been a few little lulls in it for me, but nothing to make me put it aside. Overall, the atmosphere of the book is just wonderful! And sure, y’all are related if you say so 😉

Lu, See above comments, lol. I think you’d really enjoy it! I know all about that ban :/ I’ve been on it too. I’m so glad that Bone arrived safely!! It is big isn’t it! Take it in small chunks. I can’t wait to read Yotsuba. Looking forward to it!

  17. I can’t help but shake my head and sigh at you silly book banners. NOT because you’re on a buying ban but because you put yourself in the path of temptation by going to the store!!!! Why would you do that? It’s like picking up a cigarette and lighting it but not smoking it. *shakes head again* 😛

Um, I know I’m a fairly new commenter, but I’m hoping that you know I’m pulling your leg, right? LOL–just didn’t want you to think, wow, who does that Trish girl think she is? 🙂

  18. Book bans are HARD. Kudos to you for staying strong. I don’t have that type of resolve.

I am currently reading Her Fearful Symmetry too (I had pre-ordered it as well) but I’m no more than 50 pages in. Good so far.

  19. Everytime you do a bad bloggers post, I consider imposing my own book-buying ban on myself 😉

Way to go on getting out of B&N without breaking your own ban!! I’d be in tears for sure.

  20. what a great selection of books. I see you are reading Her Fearful Symmetry now. Hope you are liking it as I will be reading it this month as well. Enjoy all your books.
