Reading Rambles and Giveaway Winners

This was supposed to be a Sunday Salon, but it’s nearly Monday now, so it’ll just be a “reading rambles” post :p That works, right? I wanted to talk about the two books I’m reading right now because I’m really surprised by both of them and I’m totally loving them!! They’re great!

inkThe first is an audiobook and you might be surprised to hear that I’m loving it. It’s Ink Exchange by Melissa Marr. Now as you all know, I had some problems with Wicked Lovely, mostly dealing with the date rape scene, and I’m still sticking with that scene as a date rape scene. No, there was no intercourse, but all that’s said is that they didn’t have intercourse…we do know that they kissed, and woke up together and that Aislinn actually accepts her fate after that instead of being horrified that she was slipped “summer wine”. Sorry, I just have problems with that. Many people said that if I had problems with that, just wait until I get to Ink Exchange.

In the very first chapter, a rape is introduced. Now I’m assuming it’s a rape because I’m only on chapter 3, but it seems pretty obvious that Leslie was raped by her brother’s friends and her brother actually profited from it. Here’s the thing. I don’t have a problem at all with Marr writing this. I actually have sympathy for Leslie’s character. Why? Because here, she doesn’t paint rape in a positive light! I don’t think at all that Marr intentionally meant to say that date rape is ok in Wicked Lovely. I know she wouldn’t do that. But it came off that way to me. Here, she takes a stance against it and says, it’s wrong. And I really like Leslie’s character. In the first three chapters, she’s trying to reclaim her body for herself…and I just know she’s going to get screwed over for it, but at least she’s trying :p

Onto my second book…that book is Breathers by S.G. Browne. Oh My God this book is so good!!! Let me start by saying that it’sbreathers nothing at all like what I expected. I was totally expecting like this silly romance zombie tale. That’s what the cover would have you think, right? Well it’s not. There’s definitely some witty humor there. It’s dark humor (the book opens with a guy realizing that he’s cut his parents into pieces and stuffed them into a freezer) but it’s very humorous at times. But really, the book has quite a lot of serious issues that it tackles. Mainly, it tackles issues of stereotypes, racism, discrimination, and injustice all through the idea of zombies. It’s genius if you think about it. I’ve never actually been touched by zombies before, but these zombies are doing it!

Basically, zombies have been around since the civil war, but are just becoming more prevalent in society. No one knows why they exist, but they do. However, “breathers” do not accept them as they try to integrate into society. They’re not allowed in public places, there are numerous laws against them, they’re treated like animals, they’re not allowed to congregate, hate crimes are constantly committed against them…sound familiar? It’s all stuff we’ve been through and continue to go through and I just think that Browne has done a genius job so far with this novel. And I love the main characters. They’re fantastic.

So that’s it for what I’m reading right now. I actually have a review that I plan on writing for tomorrow!! I finished Uncle Montague’s Tales of Terror and it was deliciously creepy 🙂 Perfect little RIP read that reminded me a lot of Edward Gorey, but we’ll save all of that for tomorrow.

I also got some fantastic news the other day 😀 I might get to meet another blogger and it’s someone that I’ve just gotten to know recently and I already think that she’s one of the most incredible people out there!! Yep, it’s Amanda at The Zen Leaf 😀 😀 She’s talking about possibly coming down here with her family in December!!! Are you kidding me?? Debi and Amanda in one year! How cool is that? I hope it happens!!

  1. hm. I had to sit here and think about what you were talking about in regards to the scene in Wicked Lovely… I think I remember now… I apparently had blocked it out! Same with Ink Exchange, actually. That’s probably not a good thing, but in any case, I am glad you are enjoying it! I still haven’t read book three and with the crazy schedule of reading I keep setting for myself I doubt I will anytime soon.

Congrats to the winners! I am jealous about the complete BONES. I really really want that. Guess I will have to buy!

  2. The part that disturbs me about Ink Exchange is later in the book. I think it takes up most of the last 1/3 or so, I can’t remember exactly. Like Kailana, I think I blocked out the beginning!

    And congratulations to the winners!

  3. Okay, I guess I should count myself lucky that I’m coming away from here only adding one book to my wish list instead of two, huh? 😉 I just don’t know if Marr’s books are for me. But Breathers…oh, how you’ve made me want that one!!!!

Congrats to all the winners! Sounds like Amanda’s win was quite appropriate, huh? 😀 How fun, fun, fun that you all might be getting together in a couple months!!! Is it okay to admit I’m a bit jealous? I know, bad me…but I just still miss you soooo much. 😦 And do promise that you’ll give Amanda a huge, huge hug for me, okay?

  4. Yay yay yay!!

  5. Wow! A shoutout and a win. That’s awesome! Thanks Chris. I will email you. 🙂

  6. Kelly, I bought book three thinking it was book 2 :p That’s why I’m listening to the audiobook of book 2 now, lol. I’m enjoying it though! And you have to read Bones!! Sorry you didn’t win 😦

Softdrink, Oh no…I didn’t know there was ANOTHER part!! We’ll see what happens later…

Debi, I’m glad you only walked away with one added to the wishlist 😉 Breathers is really good so far! And it was a total impulse buy. Just saw it on the “staff recommends” shelf at B&N and bought it because of the cover, lol. But it’s so good! I’m jealous that you’re NOT coming down here again, lol. Oh, wouldn’t that be fun if you came down at the same time as Amanda!! LOL…I’ll give her a hug for you though 🙂

Lu, Yay is right 🙂 I was so happy when Random.org picked your number!!!

Amanda, They’ll be on their way to you this afternoon!!! Like with Lu, I was thrilled when random.org picked your name for that prize pack! I think you’ll really enjoy the books! I hope you do.

  7. Congratulations to the winners! And I had some problems with Wicked Lovely, you are the first other person I’ve read who has too! I haven’t decided if I want to read Ink Exchange yet.

  8. I’m so glad you’re enjoying Ink Exchange!

Since I was so sick yesterday, I got through 7 of the 9 CDs for Wicked Lovely. Which means you’ll be getting another too-long e-mail soon! :p

  9. Oh, and if I wasn’t good friends with Lu, I’d try to steal Bones out of her mailbox. :p
