Reading Journal 2/14/09

Remember when Dewey used to do these posts? I always used to love Dewey’s Reading Journal posts. Maybe I’ll start doing some of my own when I don’t have anything else to say. In fact, this may turn into more of a Sunday Salon since I have more to talk about than just reading :p

I have been reading though! But just barely :/ I haven’t been in much of a reading mood lately believe it or not and can’t really get into anything that I pick up. I am in the middle (or beginning) of Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides and I have to say that I am in love with his writing style!! It’s just amazing. He’s a wonderful storyteller and paints the most vivid picture you can imagine as you read his writing. Sadly, I’m only 79 pages into this chunkster since I’m always exhausted when I have some free reading time. I end up just falling asleep. Monday should finally give me some time off to actually read a decent amount and enjoy what I’m reading. At this rate, I’m lucky if I finish this book by the end of the month. I have all of these library books that I have to read too!! Seriously, like 8 of them just sitting here and the first batch is due back on the 23rd :/ Looks like I’ll be renewing them.

snuggieI did get a reader’s best friend…that would be the Snuggie! I found it at Walgreens for $14.99 which comes out to way cheaper than the tv infomercial would have you pay. Seriously, you should get one of these…apparently you can’t help but be happy when you wear one of these…just look at the box. They’re all so happy. They look kind of cultish when you think about it…reminds me of the Heaven’s Gate people…remember them??

Another reason for my not reading lately is that Mardi Gras started yesterday! I’ve never been that big of a fan of Mardi Gras, but it’s really cool this year because my friend is renting a house right on the parade route. I love New Orleans. The city is just full of an electric feeling during this time of the year. I thought I’d share some very crappy pictures and I might do this throughout Mardi Gras and sort of chronicle it this year.

Here’s the first picture. This is the parade lining up in front of Jroy’s house. It’s much bigger than the picture would have you thing. For parades, they always have the “royalty” floats first which tend to be much smaller and carry the king, queen, captain, maids, etc. They you get the big two story floats with animatronics and all kinds of stuff. I’ll have to take some pics of those next time. One of my favorite things about New Orleans is the old trees everywhere. Uptown New Orleans is covered with oak trees. You can see a couple in the pic. They literally line all of the streets and form a canopy. I love watching the streetcar go down the neutral ground of St. Charles underneath the trees. Anyway, enough rambling, here’s the pic:

parade1You can click these to enbiggen (I love that made up word :p) them. This second picture is just me and Jroy drunk on her patio :p another great thing about New Orleans is that there is a bar in walking distance of wherever you are :p And you can drink on the streets! So maybe that’s not such a great thing, but we like it. We walked down to Superior Grill and got some Margaritas, then switched to wine.

parade2Finally, here’s a pic of one of the marching bands. I adore the marching bands in parades. Used to hate them when I was a kid because it meant that I wasn’t catching beads, but now I really love them. Poor guys had to wear rain coats because it was raining 😦 Lots of fun anyway though!

parade3Let me know if any of you ever come down for Mardi Gras!! I’d love to do something!

2. I found this wonderful video of my old professor, Dr. Zonana talking about her book, Dream Homes. One of my favorite reads of last year. Go check it out!!

  1. What do you mean, enbiggen a made-up word? it’s perfectly cromulent!

Love the pics! And that blanket is intriguing. Although I am addicted to the lap duvet my husband got me for Christmas a couple years ago. It’s a mini-down comforter, just the right size for curling up on the sofa with a book. But now you’ve got me wishing it had sleeves… :-p

  2. Ps. Any idea how I get my blogger avatar to appear in the comments of a wordpress blog? Anyone? Anyone?

  3. Now I want to come for Mardi Gras! Legal drinking the streets! It’ll be like Russia all over again. 🙂

I’ve seen those commericals for Snuggles on TV and mocked them endlessly…I guess I should stop the mockery. 😉

  4. I always loved Dewey’s reading journal posts too. I’ve also considered doing them sometimes…they’re perfect for when I’m in the mood to just chat about whatever books I have going.

I’m so glad you like Jeffrey Eugenides’ writing! He’s my favourite author writing-wise…what he can do with a single sentence leaves me in awe. Middlesex is one of those fast going chunksters, but chunksters are always chunksters, of course…so if you want to read some of those library books first I’ll understand 😛

I’m glad you’ve been having fun!

  5. This does sound like a Sunday Salon post. Whilst my own Sunday Salon today sounds like a Bad Bloggers post. 😀

  6. Love the word “enbiggen”!! Love the photos! Need to visit New Orleans, especially during Mardi Gras! And love your journal idea! Nice post, Chris! I’m going to read Middlesex soon, too.

  7. out there boozin’ and partyin’ eh?.. yep that’s my son alright! :o)

  8. Darla, I’m glad you think enbiggen is cromulent 😉 I am indeed enjoying my blanket with sleeves, lol…and Nymeth offered you some help on the gravatar!

Eva, Come on down!!! It’s so much fun. I think you’d really enjoy mardi gras 😀 I mock the snuggie commercials too…so much so that I had to have one :p

Nymeth, You should definitely do a reading journal post every now and then! Though this really wasn’t much of a reading journal :p Oh well, misnamed post…You’re right, Middlesex is a very fast moving chunkster! I just have been so tired lately 😦 You should come down with Eva for mardi gras 😉

Claire, I loved reading your bad bloggers-ish post 🙂 Just subscribed to your blog! I really enjoy it 🙂

Robin, Isn’t it a great word? I think you’d enjoy Mardi Gras!! It’s great! Enjoy Middlesex!

Deslily, Yep, I take after my mama 😉 I’ll post more pics as we go along!

  9. Thanks for the link, Nymeth – I was getting tired of being a nondescript quilt square! 🙂

  10. I checked out the Dream Homes link – thanks! I’ve had that book on my TBR list since you posted about it a while back.
