When Twilight Burns by Colleen Gleason

I’ve been a fan of Colleen Gleason’s Gardella Vampire Chronicles since book one was released, but never so much as now after reading When Twilight Burns, the fourth book in the series. It’s hard to review the fourth book in a series without spoiling the previous three, so I’ll give you my basic thoughts and a few key elements.

For those unfamiliar with the series, it follows Victoria Gardella, a born Venator…hunter of vampires, as she seeks out and destroys the undead in 19th century London. Mix in some romance, incredible writing, edge of your seat action, and some of the most memorable characters, and you have the Gardella Vampire Chronicles; what some have described as Buffy meets Jane Austen.

This book finds Victoria facing a new challenge – there’s evidence that a vampire is attacking openly in the daylight, something she’s never before had to face. Anybody could be that vampire seeing as the potion used to enable an undead to walk in the daylight also masks the vampire from a venator. There is also the continuous battle for Victoria’s affection between Max and Sebastian and towards the end of the book, I believe we have an idea of where that will end, and of course Colleen didn’t disappoint me. Or maybe she will, you never know with her 😉

The best thing about this book in my opinion is the big dysfunctional reunion. That’s what this book felt like and it worked absolutely perfectly. We see characters from past books make appearances here and of course I won’t go any further than that in giving any details, but it couldn’t have been written any more perfectly! Seriously, it was just wonderfully done and my heart was just beating non-stop from page one to page 356 (yes, that includes the sneak peak of book 5). The action was intense, the romance was steamy, the characters were incredibly real and believable as always.

Now onto book 5 which comes out in March 2009 :/ I can’t wait, but at the same time I can because I know that sadly it’ll be the last of this series. It’ll no doubt be another great one though.

  1. Shame the next one will be the last. Hopefully by the time it comes out I will have finally started this series. I feel rubbish as everyone raves about it and I keep meaning to pick up The Rest Falls Away. Glad you are enjoying them more and more.

  2. gosh I envy you having to wait…not! lol You know how much I love “waiting for the next installment” ! When it was the one and only set of books I had to do that with (Harry Potter) it didn’t bother me so much.. Now I have many and don’t like it at all ! grrrrrrrrrr!

  3. I surely wish I didn’t have this irrational block when it comes to these books! So many people absolutely adore this series, including people like you and Carl, whose tastes I trust implicitly, and yet still I can’t make myself try them. Well, RIP’s coming, right? Maybe then.

  4. Glad you enjoyed it as much as I did, Chris. It was such a fun book and I too look forward to and dread the next. Although I believe we’ll see future stories in this universe, if not with the same characters. It will be hard to leave the gang behind though.

Don’t worry Debi, you may trust our tastes and still not like the books if you read them. I doubt it but it is possible and so I wouldn’t worry about it. When and if the time is right you’ll get right into them.

  5. Rhinoa, At least when you start reading it you won’t have to wait patiently for each book in the series…you can just gobble them all up at the same time! You’ll love the series, I’m sure of it!

Deslily, I know exactly how you feel! I hate waiting for all of these damn series…that’s why I just distract myself by reading so many different things, lol…the only problem is, I forget what happened in the last book when I pick up the next book in the series.

Debi, I wish you didn’t have that irrational block to, lol. I really think you’ll like this series when and if you do pick it up. It’s heart thumping! It would make a great read for RIP.

Carl, I’m REALLY going to miss this set of characters but I’m sure the next series she does will give us a whole new set of characters to fall in love with. It’s going to be sad to see them go though. This one really rocked though didn’t it? Any more entries into the photo competition? I’m really bummed that I haven’t been able to enter…maybe I can find another way to score an ARC 😉

  6. I cannot believe I am behind in this series! It really should be the next series I work on catching up in! I just go so far behind in everything reading-related this year! Anyways, thanks for reminding me to get my butt in gear. haha.

  7. It will be sad to say goodbye to these characters but I’m really looking forward to seeing how it all turns out in the last book. Is it March yet? 😛

  8. I prefer a series not last too long since there’s always a point when quality declines, but Gleason has continued to get better. I love these books.
